It's Sunday. That means it's time for another Week in Games column, our weekly retrospective of the news and info from the Mac game industry. It's our opportunity to cover some of the events in Mac gaming that we may not have had the ability to cover during the week.
Alice available for pre-order
Aspyr Media says they're now taking orders for American McGee's Alice, the new first-person shooter currently in development for the Mac at Westlake Interactive. It's derived from the Quake 3 Arena engine, and it depicts a dark story inspired by Lewis Carroll's Alice stories.
Dark Castle 3 Demo gets new public beta
One of the all-time Mac classics is currently being readied in a new incarnation — Z Sculpt Entertainment is working on a new game based on the old classic, one of the first commercial Mac game releases ever. Z Sculpt's Zachary Black announced this past week that a new version of the game's public beta demo (version 3.1) is ready for download. Visit the Web site for more details. The game will be published by Delta Tao upon completion.
Escape Velocity: Nova to be Carbonized for OS X
Escape Velocity: Nova is the 'threequel' to one of Ambrosia Software's most popular games. It's a vast action/role playing game of sorts that puts you in the captain's chair of a spacecraft as you go from system to system, ferrying passengers and cargo and getting involved in interstellar intrigue. In his latest status update, programmer Matt Burch says the game is mostly Carbonized. That means that you'll be able to play it on OS X without booting up Classic.
Harpoon 3 now has a reseller
Jesse Spears' endless labor of love, Harpoon 3, continues this week. It's a naval warfare simulator released in previous incarnations as a commercial game — Spears resurrected the title and re-released it. If you've been unable or unwilling to buy it using PayPal, you'll be happy to know that he's signed up a reseller to take orders for it now.
Reckless Drivin' works with Mac OS X
Jonas Echterhoff has released a new version of his 2D, scrolling and scaling action/arcade-style game for the Mac, Reckless Drivin'. The new version, 1.3, fixes a few bugs, and also works with Mac OS X. The game takes advantage of changes in 10.0.2, by the way, so make sure you're using the latest Mac OS X version if you plan to download this.
Elsewhere on the Web
Apple's own games site is becoming a great resource for people to learn more about the Mac and games. This past week the site posted an article by Brad Cook called Worth the Wait, detailing the Omni Group's efforts with Mac OS X. Over at Inside Mac Games, meanwhile, they've posted a review of Creative's Sound Blaster Live! for Mac. MacGamer rounded out their weekly coverage with an interview with Bill Heineman, programmer of Logicware, Contraband, and now Mumbo Jumbo fame. And GamesMania added a review of Links LS 2000 to their continuing Mac coverage.

Closer to home
We weren't slackin' off on the job here at MacCentral last week, either. We reported that GeForce 3 cards are shipping… well, for the PC anyway; we also told you about a new Cro-Mag Rally update with improved support for Mac OS X; brought word from Humongous Entertainment about the release of Spy Fox: Operation Ozone, a fun new adventure game for kids; we had some bad news from Aspyr Media — it looks like Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed has been 'postponed indefinitely; gave a first look at the new iBook, Apple's completely redesigned consumer portable (not shabby for games, by the way); news from MacSoft that Centipede has gone GM and more.
Get out (itch) (ralphyua, jamesmusic, anna gong) mac os. As always, we invite you to drop us a line if there's game news you'd like us to cover which we're not now doing, or if you have a Mac game-related product or service you'd like our readers to know about. ‘Til next time, have fun!
